Writing a novel can be similar to taking a voyage across the ocean. The day starts out with blue skies and a clear horizon as you sit down to your first blank page. You drop the lines, and your brain is whirling with ideas when you take the wheel or the keyboard, and begin to navigate through your thoughts. You transit narrow channels and anchor for a while in a small bay to let your plot rest, i.e. making your third pot of coffee and glancing at the clock that says two a.m. Heaving up the anchor you sail into the unknown. Sometimes there isn’t enough wind to fill your sheets and your story stalls. No worries! The weatherman has forecast a storm warning. The wind has returned, and so has your creativity. Gusts fill the sails and your mind and story flows with a following flood. Just watch out for the hurricane warnings. Too much wind, too much content, time to trim the sheets and redraft.

Eventually, you return and step onto the oiled timbers of the wharf, story in hand. A writer’s adventure is always interesting to hear. Share yours.
