Writing for the joy of it, not for a living

If you’re an aspiring author, here’s what I’ve learned so far: You think writers block is difficult? What comes next once a publisher has acquired your story is like running through a cornfield maze on Tryptamine, but you’re going to love every minute of it.

Greetings! My name’s Natasza Waters. “Is that your real name?” you ask. Course not, but when I decide to come out of the closet, you’ll be the first to know. Why am I in the closet? That’s easy, what I write vs. what I do.

What I do is jaw clenching, gritty, down to earth, reality rubbing, creativity crushing work. That’s right, I work for the government. There’s no time for whimsy, only the black and white of implementing procedures, policies and action, usually at the same time. Duking it out with other agencies, placating those that believe they’re on the top of the food chain, instead of part of it, and a lot of jaw dropping bureaucratic red tape.

And then there’s my creative writing streak. It cuts a swath through my rugged reality like the bow of a ship through water. Although I suppressed it for over twenty years, it swam hard to surface, so I threw it a life ring. My writing is about love and struggle or conversely the struggle in love. It’s the tension, the what ifs, and the antagonists that drive the protagonists to a happily-ever-after ending—well most of the time—that you’ll find in my novels.

Siren Bookstrand publishing has given me my first opportunity to share the sometimes not so rounded and perfect lives of my characters. Debuting in October 2011 is my novel “Too Grand For Words.” What thrills me about Siren is the acceptance that an adult novel and a well told story can co-exist. My novel is a story first, and adult content second. The journey of the characters, their discoveries and their secrets keep a reader flipping pages. Writing a story for the purpose of explicit scenes is not my angle. Telling a story where the reader hopes the characters overcome the hurdles that life plunks in their way—is. Yet, physical love is part of our reality, and without it, I find a story is just not complete.

Where my writing career goes from here is completely unknown, but the stories circling above my keyboard have keen eyes, and are hungry for exposure. I’ll keep writing, if you keep reading.

Creativity, love and the future

If you’re an aspiring author I know all about your dreams and desire. You want to share those stories bumping into each other in the atoms of your brain. It’s not easy to find someone to say “Yes” to your writing.

I’ll share my triumphs and many missteps that are no doubt to come. I’ll also be bringing some talented ladies to talk about their creative ventures as well as their paths to finding love. The fact is, there’s reality, there’s fiction, and then there’s that purgatory of hope that everyone waffles through from time to time. My guests will bring their stories, and no doubt a few belly laughs as well.

Love isn’t easy, it comes with the squeezing of your chest, an emotional kick to your endorphins and the swelling of your heart. Sounds pretty brutal, and it can be. So why do so many people crave it. Simple, it joins us to another.

When we’re alone we connect to the T.V. or a book. The sound of silence is good for the soul, but the heart needs to hear the beat of other hearts. Not many people in this world strive to be alone. You can do it, but it’s like eating an Oreo cookie without the white, creamy inside: You just know there’s something missing. There’s a reason for that, and maybe my guests can expand on the topic as will my novel.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you! Until then, it’s back to the keyboard…and maybe some laundry. I’ll leave you with a blurb from “Too Grand For Words.”

Steven Porter’s successes are as rugged and powerful as he is. He owns Hollywood, but no woman has ever owned him. During a business trip to Las Vegas, he becomes lost in Moira’s siren eyes. It’s going to take an ocean full of seduction to get her to see his way.

Moira Viterra is a matriarch of the sea. Working with ship captains and gnarly mariners, she won’t let any man command her. But she can’t control the forces that keep her a recluse.

An evening that begins with sizzling glances across a blackjack table ignites the heat in Steven, enough to know Poseidon’s daughter is different. Synchronicity and irony join hands to box him into a corner. Steven tries to hide who he really is from Moira.
